Tesofensine was originally developed for neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, but later showed significant appetite-suppressing and weight-loss effects during clinical trials.
It works by increasing levels of key neurotransmitters in the brain:
- Dopamine → affects reward and motivation (reduces food cravings)
- Serotonin → improves satiety and mood regulation
- Norepinephrine → increases metabolic activity and alertness
Clinical studies showed notable weight reduction compared to placebo, but development for obesity treatment has been limited due to:
- Potential side effects (increased heart rate, insomnia, anxiety)
- Lack of final regulatory approval in major markets
It remains a research-use compound only and is not legally approved as a prescription weight-loss medication in most countries.
